Hosted by Chandra Wobschall and Paul Houtkooper
Welcome back, JDE Connection listeners! We’re thrilled to continue the conversation about User Defined Objects (UDOs) in this week’s episode. Fun fact—this episode is dropping right around our podcast’s one-year anniversary. Can you believe it’s been a year already? Time flies when you’re having fun!
Paul also just celebrated a milestone birthday (no numbers mentioned, of course). Congrats to Paul for being, well, not forever 29! In true Midwest spirit, we like to keep things lighthearted before jumping into the technical details.
Setting the Stage
In Episode 45, we explored the UDO categories of personalization and extensibility. From grid formats to saved queries, these tools empower users to tailor JD Edwards EnterpriseOne to their needs without diving into the dreaded “C-word” (customizations, not Chandra!).
This week, we’re tackling orchestrations and workflow management. These advanced UDO capabilities are game changers for automating processes, enhancing efficiency, and empowering users to work smarter, not harder.
What Are Orchestrations?
Paul kicked off the discussion with a fantastic explanation of orchestrations. Think of orchestrations as JD Edwards’ proprietary version of robotic process automation (RPA). They allow users to:
- Convert E1 business logic into REST-based services.
- Automate tasks and integrate with external systems like mobile apps or cloud services.
- Create workflows that interact seamlessly with EnterpriseOne and external tools.
Whether you’re scheduling tasks, launching applications, or integrating data, orchestrations make it possible to streamline processes without rendering applications.
For those curious about real-world applications, head over to LearnJDE.com for a treasure trove of use cases. You’ll find examples ranging from automating manufacturing operations to managing accounting transactions.
Using UDOs to Manage Your Workflows
UDOs can be another critical piece of helping you manage your day-to-day workflows. Chandra walked us through these tools, including:
- Notifications: Alert users to specific business events or required actions via the E1 menu bar, email, or text.
- Tasks: Track statuses, deadlines, and resources for projects.
- Watchlists: Monitor criteria-based alerts directly in the E1 menu, keeping you informed without needing to open specific applications.
- Workflow Studio: Automate paper-based processes into streamlined digital workflows, reducing manual effort and enhancing collaboration.
- Enterprise Process Modeler: New in Release 25, this tool graphically maps, monitors, and measures your key business processes, helping you identify bottlenecks and inefficiencies.
Why It Matters
As Paul noted, these tools don’t just make life easier for users—they also reduce dependency on IT teams. By empowering citizen developers with no-code and low-code solutions, UDOs free up IT resources for more strategic initiatives.
Midwesternism of the Week
We ended the episode with our signature Midwesternism—this time, a discussion about outdoor adventures involving furry friends. It’s a reminder that even in the dead of winter, there’s always a way to enjoy the outdoors.
