Sinclair Broadcast Group’s Move to Oracle Fusion Cloud

Mike Urgo, a Senior HRIS Analyst at Sinclair Broadcast Group, recently gave a presentation to Quest users about how he and his company moved to Oracle Fusion Cloud while dealing with change management and working toward success with data analytics.

Some key takeaways from the presentation include:

  • It is essential to prepare your team with plenty of information and best practices.
  • Establishing expectations, responsibilities and structure early on, it will help avoid playing the “Blame Game” later down the road.
  • Collaboration is the key to success.

Sinclair Broadcast Group went live on Oracle EBS in 2003. It wasn’t until 2013 that they decided it was time to move on from EBS. After much consideration, the project to move to Oracle Fusion Cloud kicked off in August 2016 and they went live with the project in July 2017.

Mike highlighted a quote from Admiral Grace Hopper that resonated with him during the time of this project. She said, “The most dangerous phrase in the language is, ‘We’ve always done it this way.’” Sinclair Broadcast Group related to this quote because change management was one of the company’s most significant obstacles to overcome during the move to Fusion Cloud.

To help deal with change management, the company armed its employees with large amounts of information and best practices to help them prepare for the new system. They defined common terms, got everyone speaking the same language and on the same page.

They also found that it was important to establish expectations, responsibilities and the changing structure early on. It’s common for employees to try to play the “Blame Game” during new projects that bring on change. However, clearly outlining what was expected from everyone helped eliminate that issue because everyone knew how things would work moving forward.

Mike explained that the key to their success was collaboration. The more collaborative you are with your partners and your team, the more receptive they are to changes, as well as the tools and information that you provide to them. Inversely, the more isolated everyone works, the more challenges you will face along the way.

Moving forward, Sinclair Broadcast Group is looking at their business and trying to find instances where implementing analytics could be beneficial. They are working on doing things that have never been done before, like marrying their sales data with demographic data.
