In this edition of PeopleSoft Talk, Marc Weintraub sits down with Dave Bain to discuss deploying PeopleSoft to the Oracle Cloud.
Deploying PeopleSoft to the Oracle Cloud basically means taking your existing PeopleSoft application and, instead of running it in your data center, you run it on the Oracle Cloud. It’s not quite Software as a Service (SaaS) as that has different licensing than on-prem. You’re taking your existing PeopleSoft application with all of your customizations, enhancements and changes and, instead of running it in your data center, you’re lifting it and putting it out on the Oracle Cloud.
The PeopleSoft licensing is the same. Now, instead of running it on your on-premise hardware, you’re going to be running it on machines that you’re licensing or that you’re paying for from the Oracle Cloud. The use of those machines is in addition to your license. You also have the option of running on the Platform as a Service (PaaS) by placing your data in the Oracle database. Oracle is offering programs where you can take your on-prem database license, shift it and run it up into the Oracle Cloud. So it’s really converting over some of the aspects, like buying hardware or buying a license or database, and turning those into subscriptions.
Why would an organization go down this path of deploying PeopleSoft to Oracle Cloud?
1) Cost – you have to evaluate the cost. There are tools that Oracle provides to help analyze the cost and see how it compares to what your existing costs are today.
2) Features of the cloud – the cloud offers more capabilities. One of them is the elasticity. You can expand resources and collapse resources based upon your needs. Cloud resources do not go out of date.
3) Automation – PeopleSoft provides automation to make PeopleSoft applications run better and easier. PeopleSoft automation also makes it easier to administer and deploy to the Cloud.
PeopleSoft Cloud Manager, which is available in the Oracle Marketplace, is a product created for automation. It runs in the Oracle Cloud and helps you manage your PeopleSoft environments in the cloud. It helps out with your lifecycle by subscribing to changes, so any change that PeopleSoft publishes can be subscribed to. This means it’s copied into your cloud environment and it’s available for maintenance right there. Then there’s the typical administrative functions like monitoring, evaluating logs, etc.
