Key Things to Know about Selective Adoption

One topic that many were focused on at RECONNECT 18 was the Selective Adoption model and how to best understand and utilize it. Based on the sessions hosted at the conference, here are some key takeaways:

  • Many encourage updating to 9.2 to avoid compatibility problems with updates.
  • PeopleSoft Update Manager (PUM) will allow you to update multiple Images at a time.
  • PUM will alert you if something you’ve chosen has any prerequisites that need to be implemented along with your selection.

What You Want, When You Want It

In the past, the adoption of new Images for PeopleSoft has been a bundle deal, all or nothing. Now Selective Adoption allows customers to pick and choose specific upgrades needed for their organization.

Selecting New Features and Upgrades

After new functionality developments and fixes are tested, they are released into what some refer to as Oracle’s “gold copy.” This “gold copy” is the new Image that gets released into PeopleSoft Update Manager. Whenever a new PUM Image is released, customers can download and selectively comb through and decide what new features or fixes they want to adopt.

Customers are also able to do multiple PUM updates at once. Whether you’re only moving from PUM Image 25 to 26 or jumping from Image 13 to 28, you can do it all in one update. The latest “gold copy” PUM Image runs a comparison to your local PUM Image to spot the differences so that it will offer you all the new features since your last Image update.

If you select an update that requires a prerequisite update along with it, the PUM will automatically select the additional changes required to accommodate what you have chosen. Once you’ve picked all the changes you want to implement, a Change Package is created and applied to your PeopleSoft software.

Advantages of Selective Adoption

This Selective Adoption model reduces both the cost and the amount of testing required when choosing new features to implement in your PeopleSoft software. Compatibility issues are also no longer a problem once you’ve upgraded to 9.2 because all the new developments are designed to fit with that final release.

Top Tips

Here are some tips on how you can best implement Selective Adoption:

  • Get current and update to 9.2 if you haven’t already.
  • Download each new PUM, even if you aren’t immediately adopting, so it’s ready for you if/when you need it.
  • Periodically “true up” to Oracle’s “gold copy.”
    •  Plan this regularly. For example, every other July.
  • Stay updated on PeopleTools.
    • If your local PUM instance isn’t up-to-date with the latest PeopleTools, they may have compatibility issues
